How we sauna

Never done it before? Follow these five steps and go at your own pace.

  1. A copper rain shower head pouring water against a corrugated iron wall1

    Cold rinse

Start with a shower. Wash off the day before you head in.

  2. Friends chatting and sipping water on the tiered pine benches inside the sauna2

    Sauna

Around 15 minutes on the benches. Sip water as you go.

  3. A copper rain shower head pouring water against a corrugated iron wall3

    Cold rinse

Rinse off the sweat before you jump in the plunge.

  4. A row of black cold plunge tubs beside the timber sauna wall4

    Cold plunge

Slow, deep breaths. About 15 breaths is a good guide – for some that’s 30 seconds, for others it’s five minutes.

  5. The lounge with a couch, festoon lights, ferns and log stools5

    Reset

Kick back in the lounge and let your core temperature drop before the next round.

Then do it all again. As many rounds as you like.

Why sauna?

People have been doing hot-and-cold for centuries, and for good reason. Regular sessions a few times a week can help you:

  • Unwind

Switch off and let the stress of the day melt away.

  • Recover

Loosen up tight muscles after training or a long day on your feet.

  • Sleep better

A calm, heavy-limbed tiredness that sets you up for a good night.

  • Connect

Good chat on the benches. It’s a social thing as much as anything.

Not medical advice – if you're pregnant or have a heart condition, check with your doctor first.

What to bring

  • Two towels. One to sit on in the sauna, and one for drying off with afterwards.
  • Your togs. Obviously.
  • A water bottle

That's it. We'll sort the rest.

Meet the crew

The Sauna was built by Bevin, Jamie and Francie – a local family who spent months turning a bare Ahuriri unit into the place we always wanted to sauna in. Come say kia ora.
